Facebook Spear Phishing, New 419 Scam
I received the follow email via Facebook last night that is a new variation on the old 419 scam:
I have to admit this version of the scam is compelling enough to make me actually read the email. This version of the scam actually lists an address and telephone number, but why would a lawyer use a Yahoo email address? This is just another example of how far people will go to attempt to get between you and your money.

Since the death of my client, I have written several letters to the embassy with an intent to locate any of his extended relatives whom shall be
claimants/beneficiaries of his abandoned personal estate and all such efforts have been to no avail.
More-so, I have received official letters in the last few weeks suggesting a likely proceeding for confiscation of his abandoned personal assets in line with existing laws by the bank in which my client deposited a notably high amount of money.

I find this possible for the fuller reasons that you bear a similar last name with my client making it a lot easier for you to put up a claim in that
capacity.
I propose that 35% of the net sum will accrue to you at the conclusion of this deal in so far as I do not incure further expenses.
Therefore, to facilitate the immediate transfer of this funds, you need, first to contact me via my private email:(wilsonbaker3@yahoo.co.uk) for better confidentiality, signifying your interest and as soon as I obtain your confidence I will immediately appraise you with the complete details as well as fax you the documents, with which you are to proceed and i shall direct you on how to put up an application to the bank.

Thanks for the heads up! I got a similar facebook message, searched Barrister's name, and was led to this link.
There certainly were a lot of oil magnates named Gerald and their immediate families who died in a plane crash in Mr Wilson's country. He claimed the same story to my facebook account with my family's (rare) last name.

Yes, I received the exact same email via Facebook today, July 1st. The only difference was of course my last name as well as the name of the solicitor. My barrister's name was Herbert Owen. I reported them to Facebook, not realizing they'd used the name of an actual law firm.

Oh my goodness, yes i have had exactly the same email!
Although i rang the number and the man infact answered, he sounded African, and i emailed him back because he said he would ring me. I almost got sucked in untill i found this.

WOW, I actually went with it and contacted him via email. He hasn't responded. I am so naive. I always new there was something strange about the email. Thank God I came across this.

I couldn't open my facebook inbox and I was given a warning message from Facebook team. What's going on? Thank's

I can only ask anyone who receives details of this or similar scams (or knows of anyone who receives these details) to check out the the web-site of the firm concerned and ask a direct enquiry. We have reported this to the authorities as we are very concerned about the abuse of our name.

I received the facebook message as well, but the solicitor in mine was Daniel Baker, and there was no mention of a plane crash or anything. It was just a "business offer" regarding the "late Gerald [my last name]." The tip off for me was the poor grammar and misspellings.
Seems like you almost have to be paranoid these days....

Thank you for posting this notice. I got the same message through my Facebook account. From a "David Bamber" of the same firm and the "relative" had the same first name: Gerald.
Looks like it just inserts your last name after "Gerald" to bait the hook.
David Bamber was my contact. Seemed a bit too good to be true. My name is very rare and I was surprised to see someone with my family name in England.
Just thought I would check out the Alexander JLO comany and whilst typing it in to Google, saw the predictive text come up the Alex..... Scam, leading me here. Thanks guys.
