It all about the network

Here are two items to geek out to. First is the Internet Health Report that reports the current latency of backbone carriers. Second is a very cool, but very big map of the Internet Backbone for North America from CIO.com. It wold make a great poster.

Dual Core

I agree with Alex Scoble. We do need dual core. Alex says:
The short answer, in my opinion, particularly in a business setting, is an emphatic yes!

Why? Dual CPU systems are good for anyone who needs to multitask on their system. As businesses require employees to do more and run more applications at once, multi-CPU systems will be a big help.

The shocker is many people claim the Apple MacBook Pro is the fastest Windows XP Core Duo notebook. This information isn't from some Mac fanboy. It's from PC Magazine.

The Enemy Within

Here's an interesting article from The Age that says that many businesses are now considering employees a much bigger threat to security than most external threats.

The key to keeping your network safe from the very people who make use of it is user education. Other step include locking down the network as much as possible with tool like Windows policies, having good and up-to-date back-ups, and having a plan on how to clean up any unwanted or dangerous program or behavior a user might inflict on your network.

InterAction for Law Firms

We have all heard the buzzwords surrounding law firm software today. Here's another one: Customer Relationship Management. Legal software giant LexisNexis has a CRM solution called InterAction. They claim 60% of the AmLaw 100 are using InterAction.
InterAction centralizes a firm's collective knowledge, wisdom and experience about clients and contacts, and makes it available to all authorized users — from attorneys and marketing professionals to administrators and secretaries. Every client interaction becomes an opportunity to market additional services, provide better client service, or simply reinforce a relationship. And with "ethical wall" security, InterAction protects confidential information — whether it's the entire relationship, or specific information such as private phone numbers or notes from a privileged conversation.

Sounds amazing.

New kid on the block making large inroads

In the local market there are a couple of dominate case management and document management products. The field is rapidly changing as new players take more of the market share. One that recently caught my attention is Hummingbird who makes an Enterprise Content Management system that is seeing a growing install base in law firms.

They claim 70% of the AmLaw 100 use Hummingbird Solutions. That's nothing to sneeze at.

It's been a busy few weeks

It's has been another busy, busy week here in the server room. I'm sorry for the lack of posting. I wanted my readers to know that this blog isn't dead, and I promise I will post here more.

Look for new posts in the evenings, at lunchtime, and on the weekend. I'm too busy to blog from work, and my employer isn't paying me to blog. Where did all my free time go?
