Adam Smith, Esq. on law firm IT

Adam Smith, Esq.: Is Your Firm an IT Pioneer, or a "Fast Follower?:
So we have three luminaries converging on one tentative hypothesis: If IT in law firms doesn't:

* face towards clients;

* give practitioners tools they can use enthusiastically; and

* enable migration towards higher-quality, more effective personal one-on-one interactions,

then it is not worth the candle.

Applying Law 1.0 concepts in an evolving Law 2.0 world

Dennis M. Kennedy says Reed Smith's firing of fellow blogger Denise Howell is an example of continuing "to apply Law 1.0 concepts in an evolving Law 2.0 world", especially when it comes to attracting and retaining talent.

This story is way under reported in the mainstream blogosphere. I looked for Doc Searls or another of Denise's friends to take up the topic, but I think Doc is on vacation, and I haven't seen the A-listers or anyone outside the blawosphere say one thing about it.

User Profile Hive Cleanup

Microsoft has a utility called UPHClean which helps unload the user session quickly and completely at log-off or shutdown.
The User Profile Hive Cleanup service helps to ensure user sessions are completely terminated when a user logs off. System processes and applications occasionally maintain connections to registry keys in the user profile after a user logs off. In those cases the user session is prevented from completely ending. This can result in problems when using Roaming User Profiles in a server environment or when using locked profiles as implemented through the Shared Computer Toolkit for Windows XP.

This weekend when I tried to reboot a number of servers thanks to last week's black Tuesday, I had to use the power button to shut them down after they got stuck at the "Windows is shutting down" screen. I might give this a try to see if it helps.

Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000; Windows NT; Windows Server 2003; Windows XP

I don't think she will have any problem finding another job

I’m shocked to learn of the separation of Denise Howell from Reed Smith. I haven’t been reading many blawgs recently. Thanks to Bob Coffield over at the Health Care Law Blog for pointing out the story.

Nathan Burke has a nice short summary of what might have went happened.

Kevin O'Keefe says: "Internet discussion about the law firm of Reed Smith, a major international law firm, is up over 50% since last week. Why? Because they fired one of America's leading blogger's, Attorney Denise Howell."

Virtual PC vs. VMware

I read John Tränkenschuh's Virtual PC and VMware: A Comparative Review with great interested. In the end, I think I'm just as confused as before.

I guess it boils down to what you will be doing with it. If you are going to be running Windows with it use Virtual PC. If you are going to be running Linux or some other OS, juse VMware.

Also you need to consider that you will need a separate licensed OS for each virtual machine.

Virtual PC for x86 is free now, btw.

I might have posted this before, but I wanted to post it again: Dennis Kennedy on Bridging the Widening Communications Gap Between Lawyers and IT Departments. Dennis really hits the nail on the head with this one.
